Happy New Year! 2011 was great as you can see below! 2012 will be even better!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas and a wonderful New Year with your children back home.

 

Messages have been flooding in from all the boarders throughout the holiday; wishing one another well and counting down the days to a new term, which is always a good sign!

 

The end of term was as busy as usual and we ended on a high note, after all of the exams. I have attached the link to the Tenbury House blog so that you can have a look at the Tenbury House Christmas 2011video. It was such great fun and all credit goes to the boarders who played their respective roles and in particular, our Head Boy, Alex Murphy who directed and produced the video.

 

Last term was a magnificent start to the academic year and the growth of Tenbury House has been a real triumph. I am incredibly proud to lead such an impressive group of young people through their educational career. In fact, all of us here at Tenbury House are very proud of our Tenburians, your children, and we look forward to the new term and new year with much enthusiasm.

It's Almost Christmas....!

Christmas season is officially upon us and we have decorated the boarding house and have a beautiful tree that the boarders decorated this weekend. Do have a look at the photos on the blog, which also include photos and videos of birthdays we have celebrated as well. There are also photos of our very own Niotta Nilson who won Prom Queen at a Christmas ball which all international and British curriculum pupils were invited to here in Madrid.

Talking of parties, the boarders are all looking forward to the annual Tenbury House Christmas Dinner, which will be held at the Hilton Hotel this year! We are all very excited about this black tie event where teachers at the day school are also invited to celebrate this festivity with their pupils and I shall be posting photos of this, sure to be glamorous, event in the coming weeks!

Of course, along with Christmas season, comes exam season, and while Year 11 will complete their exams this week, Years 7 to 10 have yet to sit theirs, and will start next week. The sixth form will sit theirs after the holiday. Having said that, all boarders are studying religiously; eager to illustrate the fruits of their hard work this term. They are being helped along with the study sessions here at Tenbury House which are led by teachers on different nights so that our boarders are able to take full advantage of living in a boarding house.

Academic Prowess at Tenbury House

Over the past few weeks the boarders have made me very proud to be Head of Boarding at Tenbury House.

 A couple of weeks ago we hosted high tea for the school council. The boarders were confident, articulate and above all hospitable.

We were honoured to host the gathering which included Dr Fry and Mrs Blaus among others who were also very impressed by our Tenburians.

On another proud note, Tenbury House is garnering quite the reputation for the academic prowess of its boarders! In fact, just this week Marcel Hoffman and Fredrik Skippervold were awarded certificates for the highest achievement in A level Physics and Economics respectively. Emeline de Gabriac achieved an A* for Biology and Nuvola Ladi and Santiago McGorty both achieved As for Biology. Also, Magdalena Pehlivanova has earned house points for her work in Maths while Christian Owondo has been praised for his work across all subjects.

Tenbury House Triumphs!

It's a busy time here at Tenbury House as we have exams and coursework deadlines coming up in the next few weeks; and results look promising as three of our boarders won certificates for their academic work at school. Dortita Zlateva was presented with an award for Biology in Year 12, Mira Alexandrova for English in Year 12 and Sanzhar Khozai for English in Year 10. Krisitiana Abrasheva also scored top marks in her first mid term exams for the Spanish Bachillerato system which she is completing in one year instead of two.

Everyone at Tenbury House was elated at the fantastic start their peers are making at King's College and I have posted photos of them below.

 

Mid term reports will be sent out to you all via email on the 24th October. These reports will inform you of the progress your children are making thus far and highlight any areas where improvements should be made. There will be a parents evening for Year 7 parents this Thursday after school so if you have any questions you'd like me to pose in your stead please feel free to email them to me.

 

We also celebrated Maggie's birthday last weekend and we had a great time celebrating the beginning of her teenage years!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Happy Birthday Anton!

It's been a great weekend here at Tenbury House and the
highlight was celebrating Anton's birthday!

Anton turned 15 on Saturday and he celebrated with his fellow boarders
who surrounded him with smiles and hugs and gifts.

It was a lovely end to the week as we are now entering exam season in October
and November and so the heat is on, as boarders anxiously prepare
in their subject areas.

It hasn't all been work though as the competition between King's College
Houses is officially on! With the football competition out of the
way, we are now on to the song competition whereby each House must
present an anthem which will represent their House! So you can
imagine the secrecy at Tenbury House, as each group routes for
their house and the best song! As soon as we have all final versions,
I'll upload them on to the blog for you all to enjoy.

On another note, we are a charitable bunch at the boarding house and this
week, Kristiana Abrasheva led a group of boarders to bake an
enormous batch of muffins and cakes for the Macmillan Cancer Trust bake sale,
held at school. Needless to say they were delicious and she made
over 40€ for charity! Well done Kristiana!

Bhutan, Seville, China and The Hay Festival!

It has been an exciting week as two more boarders joined Tenbury House; Jia and Tshering
from Seville and Bhutan. The boarders were as welcoming as ever and both Jia and Tshering are settling in well at the boarding house. This brings us up to a grand total of 15 different nationalities at
Tenbury House!

The exciting news this week is that the boarders had the opportunity to attend the Hay Festival, in Segovia. It was a unique and invaluable experience as some of our A level English students got to
debate with the likes of Lord Desai and Gabriel Vasquez! They also toured the city of Segovia and visited the ancient aqueducts which Segovia is famous for.
They returned raving about the experience and I've posted photos below you all to enjoy.

Madrid Fashion Week and The European Showjumping Championship

 

It has been a busy week here at Tenbury house and we are now fully immersed in the autumn term at King's College.

 

Timetables have been set and routines followed and it's been a great and exciting start.

 

Academically all is in order and homework schedules are in place with House Tutors available each afternoon to help out when needed.

 

Extra curricular activities are due to start in October and again, boarders have already joined the various clubs and activities on offer, ranging from singing lessons to horse riding and swimming.

 

Your children have also been exploring a little further afield, in Tres cantos and Madrid too with excursions arranged by staff; but perhaps one of the nicest things to happen this week was the multitude of invitations received by various boarders from other day pupils. It has been very endearing to see the school community welcome the new group of 44 boarders with open arms and invitations from King's College families having been coming in by the bucket full in an effort to make boarders as welcome as possible.

On that note, please be sure to check the calendar on the school website as often as possible, as there will be events coming up which you may wish to attend, where you can meet day students and their families.

 

Boarders had the opportunity to attend Madrid Fashion Week and the European Showjumping Championship, which was held in Madrid this weekend and as you can see from the photos below, spirits were and continue to be high at Tenbury House!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It has been a fun filled weekend here at King's College Residence and a well deserved one at that!

As exams have been in full flow for the past few weeks and the boarders have been revising diligently, we decided to dedicate the entire weekend to fun and relaxation. 

Friday evening was spent at the resident's favourite Thai restaurant, in central Madrid, followed by ice cream in the royal gardens. It was a lovely balmy evening and everyone was glad to be able to call Madrid home. 

Saturday was spent with the Sharpe family who have been great supporters of our boarding house and were kind enough to invite the entire residence to a summer pool party 'a la americano'. The boarders played tennis, padel and American football followed by a relaxing break in the sauna. Snacks were served throughout the day and of course nobody wanted to leave at the end of the day. The boarders even returned with an enormous chocolate fountain which we will be putting to full use when we inaugurate the new boarding house in September.

Finally on Sunday, the tradition continued and we had our end of year summer barbecue. It was a lovely end to a wonderful weekend and by Sunday evening we were all very tired but extremely content.

King's College May Fayre 2011

 

This weekend was King's College's May Fayre and we had a great time with lots of activities designed to collect money for various charities around the world.

The residents ran a milkshake stand and there was lots going on throughout the day. There was a tombola, bouncy castle, cakes and drinks stalls and the residence band also played for the crowds. The King's College Judo Tournament was also held yesterday and our very own Daniel Murphy won gold! Well done Daniel!

It was forecast to rain on Saturday but instead we were lucky to have a gloriously sunny and warm day.

A big thank you to all those parents who came to the May Fayre from various parts of the world! It was a great day and your presence made a big difference.

Adrian Shah, you will be missed...

We come to the end of the week and the ever nearer to the end of term. Boarders are looking forward to the long summer ahead of them and at the same time, will be sorry to say goodbye to friends.

Living in a boarding house means you make friendships that may last a life time which makes it very difficult to say goodbye to friends who return to their homes on the other side of the world.

One such boarder is Adrian Shah who has taken over the blog this week. The following are his thoughts on KCR and I think you'll find they echo those of your own children.

 

Moving to a different country and setting out to study had been a desire that I had wanted to fulfill for a long time; so when the opportunity to study in Spain arose, I grabbed it with both hands.

From the moment I stepped foot on The King’s College premises, to the day I take my last step out I know that I have had a truly remarkable experience, carved out by the people I have had the great opportunity to meet and learn from.

What I shall continue to admire about the residence at Kings College is the way you are allowed to become a more self-sustained and more independent student whilst at the same time always being given the assistance you need to achieve this goal as well as other goals.

Other than being immersed in an educational environment within the boarding house, the warm company of fellow boarders makes for a realxed environment too and I have had the pleasure of great company on our outings in Madrid. I have had the chance to enter the Bernabeau stadium to watch a live Champions League game amongst other activities such as Paintballing and Go-karting; and the best aspect of these excursions, is that I was always with my friends.

As I look back at my time in the Kings College residence I feel that much has been accomplished and I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs. Nazha and all the boarders for their great company and friendship. Though I leave soon, my love for the residence shall remain.
